Obituaries – December 11, 2009

Kevin J. Heinert

Kevin J. Heinert, 50, Mandan, died of natural causes on Dec. 3, 2009, at his home.

Mass of Christian burial will was on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial was at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Kevin was born on May 21, 1959, to Liberatus and Mary (Leingang) Heinert in Minot. Kevin was raised in Mandan and graduated from Mandan High School. Kevin received an associate in applied science in business management at Bismarck State College. He was a great foreman at Twin City Roofing and Custom Roofing and was appreciated for his work.

Even with his back pain, which led to his surgery in 2002, he still enjoyed family get-togethers. Playing cards was a favorite activity for Kevin, especially pinochle. A great sportsman, Kevin fished, ice fished, threw horseshoes, bowled and golfed. He enjoyed the outdoors by spending time at the Missouri River, camping and being in the mountains.

Quiet-natured and a very giving person, Kevin was a great son, brother, uncle and friend.

Kevin will be greatly missed by his mother, Mary, Bismarck; his sister, Yvonne (Gerry) Froehlich, Mandan; his brothers, Gary (Geretta), Bismarck, and Duane (Jackie), Mandan; and nieces and nephews, Traci (Greg) Schabert, Troy (Hannah) Heinert, Kelli (Tim) Hagerott, Brian (Sarah) Heinert, and Greg (Jennifer) Froehlich.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Liberatus, in 2001.

Marion L. Holle

Marion L. Holle, 76, New Salem, died Dec. 2, 2009, at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck.

A funeral service was held on Monday, Dec. 7, at Peace Church, New Salem, with Rev. Joshua Eddy officiating. Burial too place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Marion was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Judson, to Carl and Estelle (Toepke) McHenry. In 1950 she married William Slavick in Judson, and together they had three children. Later they were divorced and on Feb. 3, 1966, she married Raymond Holle in New Salem. Marion worked as a waitress and drove truck for Loehrke Brothers and Earth Builders. She and Ray bought the Friendly Bar in New Salem in 1977, where she worked until they closed it on New Years Eve of 1992.

Best remembered for her wonderful sense of hospitality, Marion loved cooking and baking. Peach pie and zucchini bread were among her specialties, and visitors always enjoyed an abundance of food when visiting her home. Also very generous with her time, Marion could be counted on to lend a hand at a moment’s notice. Her flower and vegetable gardens, along with her many fruit trees, were important to her. Marion looked forward to the fall deer hunting season each year. Playing cards, especially gin rummy, was a hobby she enjoyed for many years, along with needle work, crochet and jigsaw puzzles. Marion’s two dogs were her pride and joy. A kind woman with a gentle touch, she will be missed by those who knew her.

Left with many memories is her husband, Ray Holle, New Salem; two sons, Dean (Diane) Slavick, Alden, Minn., and Neal Slavick, New Salem; one daughter, Ginger Snare, Jerome, Idaho; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Lois Erickson, and special friend, Clyde Pfleger, Judson; and one brother, Robert McHenry, Mandan.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents; one great-grandson, Matthew Snare; one sister, Carol “Susie” Magilke; and one nephew, David Erickson.

Ardell Schmeling

Ardell Schmeling, 75, Mandan, died Dec.3, 2009, at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck, surrounded by her loving family.

A Funeral service was held on Monday, Dec. 7, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Rev. David Hein officiating. Burial was at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery following the funeral service. 

Ardell was born April 10, 1934, in Milbank, S.D., to Clarence and Jennie (Schroeder) Steffeson. Raised and educated in the area, she proudly graduated from high school. On Jan. 22, 1955, Ardell married Wallace Schmeling in Milbank. She was a country school teacher and worked as secretary for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1959 they moved to Mandan and Ardell loved taking care of her family, and later spending time with her grandchildren.

Ardell will forever be remembered as a selfless person, sensitive to the needs of others and always putting their needs before hers. She was kind and generous, having many lifelong friends through a bridge club she’d been in for 50 years. Social and outgoing, she loved being the “room mother” for her children’s classes. A passion for arts and crafts, Ardell was a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing clothing and doing needlework, sometimes even finishing sewing projects others had started. She grew a wonderful vegetable garden each year and enjoyed canning her produce. Cooking was something she was very good at and would exchange meals with friends. After their retirements she and Wally enjoyed traveling and cruises, especially getting away from the North Dakota winters. This special woman will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered for her devotion to family and friends.

Blessed to have shared her life is her husband of 54 years, Wallace “Wally” Schmeling, Mandan; three daughters, Tami (Brian) Gale, Bismarck, Babbie (Pete) Vroman, Bellingham, Wash., and Becky (Brent) Hilfer, Mandan; one son, Randy (Dotti) Schmeling, Mandan; eight grandchildren, Lexie, Corbin, and Aliya Hilfer, Brock Schmeling, Rae Vroman, Hailey Mills, and Victoria Gale; two sisters, Shirley Schmeling, Oklahoma, and Joyce Westphal, Colorado; and one brother, Virgil (Jean) Steffeson, Colorado.

Ardell is preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Travis Hilfer; and one brother-in-law, Joe Schmeling.

Antonia Usselman

Antonia “Toni” Usselman, 86, Mandan, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Chad Gion officiating. Burial was in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Toni was born March 23, 1923, at rural Fort Rice, to Adam and Marian (Barth) Schaff. She grew up on the family farm 12 miles west of Fort Rice and attended rural school Ambulance Butte No. 4. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1941 and attended Dickinson State College, but had to leave school to care for her ailing parents. Later she passed the State Examines and taught school in Morton County-Almont, Glen Ullin, Huff and Solen for eight years.

She married Frederick Weiss on May 10, 1942, in St. John’s Church. They lived in Florida for a few years during WWII and returned to North Dakota in 1945. On June 16, 1962, she married Joe A. Robidou in Bismarck. They lived south of Bismarck until 1987. She nursed Joe through 11 surgeries until he passed away in 1998. Toni worked in Bismarck and Mandan for 13 years and later worked for Montgomery Ward until 1986. On March 12, 1999, she married Bernie Usselman-they lived in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, before returning to Mandan. He died in March 2009.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Ann Lutsch, and her fiancé, Art Arriaga, Richmond, Calif.; one sister, Bertha Doll, Glen Ullin; three step-sons, Lawrence (Lilo) Usselman, Harrisburg, Penn., Thomas Usselman, Alexandria, Va., and Robert (Michele) Usselman, Forest Hill, Md.; two step-granddaughters, Shaunesi (Loren) Naastad and Shalimar (Gary) Beach, step-great-grandchildren, Joshua Beach and Jennifer Simon, and step-great-great-grandchildren, Danica DeLapp, Brittany and Brandon Naastad.

Toni was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Pauline Ereth, Barbara Osborn, Magdeline Schaff, and Caroline Ressler; two brothers, Paul and August; and two infant brothers, Adam and Jacob.
