MAR Club December Athletes of the Month
Here are the Mandan Athletic and Recreation Club Athletes of the Month for the month of December:
Jay Flaa – Basketball
Grade: Senior
Parents: Mike and Carol Flaa
During the month of December, Flaa was the boys varsity team’s most consistent player, averaging 12 points per game and helping his team go 4-1 for the month. In addition to the statistics, Flaa also hit a game-winning shot as the Braves defeated the Century Patriots in a one-point victory.
Boys Basketball Head Coach Jason Horner said, “Jay has worked hard in the off-season, and people can see how much he has developed his game. He is our best leader, and has a terrific attitude. He has been a great joy to coach.”
In addition to basketball, Flaa participates in high school and Legion baseball, and is involved in MHS Student Council.
Upon graduation this spring, Flaa plans to attend college at Bismarck State College.
Alexis Horner – Hockey
Grade: Sophomore
Parents: Albert and Lisa Horner
Now in her fourth year on the varsity team and only in her sophomore year, Horner was the girls’ hockey team’s leading scorer, with three goals scored. With one assist, she was also tied for the lead in total points by the end of December.
After seven games played by the start of Christmas break, Horner had the team’s best plus/minus score, putting her in the lead on three main statistic categories for the team.
Peder Stenslie, head coach for the girls hockey team, said this of Horner: “Though she is not a flashy player, Alexis has made big contributions to the Mandan girls hockey team. We count on her to do the same in the future.”
Horner is also active in the MHS Swing Choir. She said, “After I graduate from high school I plan to get my generals at BSC. Then I plan to go to a four-year college like UND and get a degree in music or nutrition. If I could play hockey for UND that would be great.”
