Appearing in this week’s Mandan News is the first sports photograph taken by Rick Scarf (who’s still taking photos for the News). Rick had just quit smoking cigarettes (packs were only 50 cents then) and had used his weekly tobacco savings to purchase a Canon AE-1 camera from Labelle’s in Bismarck. One day, as Rick viewed his photos at Renners Studio, editor Ken Rogers happened by and said “Hey, those photos aren’t bad. How would you like to shoot the basketball game tonight between the Braves and Dickinson Trinity?” Rick jumped at the chance and returned that evening to the News office, where Rogers developed the film in the upstairs darkroom… and the rest is history. Rick’s first sports photo appeared in the Feb. 3 edition, showing the Braves’ Dean Breuer grabbing the ball from Trinity’s Wayne Voleske.
The Braves defeated Dickinson that evening, 53-52, and Dean Breuer was the Braves’ high scorer, with 20 points. However, the game’s winning basket was made by the Braves’ Jimmy Skjod, his only basket of the entire game.

Mandan trailed by just two points with only five seconds to go, but a foul and a “lost” ball, resulted in Dickinson scoring two free throws and a field goal. The completion of the second floor of the Memorial Building is at a standstill due to a federal ruling that no skilled labor can be employed at government expense on the building. Skilled labor is needed for the laying of facing brick, and there are no bricklayers on relief in the county. Mayor Cooley and the city commissioners are making plans to organize a Mid-Winter Festival, featuring a carnival of games, a vaudeville program and other events, as a fundraiser for the estimated $3,000 needed for skilled bricklayers to complete the building.

The North Dakota Supreme Court has disqualified Governor Thomas Moodie, thus backing up the earlier vote of impeachment by the State House of Representative. The governor, who resided in Minnesota during 1930, was removed on the grounds that he had failed to meet the state constitutional requirements that a candidate be a resident of North Dakota for five years before election. Moodie had been the governor for just one month. Lt. Governor Walter Welford, affiliated with the Nonpartisan League, will be stepping into the office, and will be North Dakota’s fourth governor in seven months.

“Wednesday evening, the last dancing party of the Comus Club to be given before Lent, occurred at the Mandan Opera House. There were about forty-five couples in attendance and a very good time was enjoyed by all. At the party, a new orchestra composed of the following rendered the music which was good, considering that they have had but very little time for practice: Mrs. Merkel, piano; R.S. Chellson, cornet; Gus Martin, 2nd cornet; E.B. Wilkinson, drums and traps; F. R. Lamd, violin.
“The club which was organized in December has proven a great help towards enlivening the winter and is in very good financial circumstances at the present time. The dancing parties will be resumed after Easter, and it is thought that the Club will be a permanent institution.”
