Mandan Saddle Club honors 2009 season champs, elects 2010 leaders

The Mandan Horse and Saddle Club honored member contestants for 2009 season achievements at a celebration held Jan. 30 at the Seven Seas Inn. Awards are based on points earned at four rodeos held between June and September. Champions are as follows:
Senior Division (age 15 and older) – All-Around – Laine Hanson, Jamestown; Reserve All-Around – Abby Knoll, Mandan; Barrel Racing – Kristina Steckler, Bismarck; Breakaway Roping – Cody Fettig, Washburn; Pole Bending – Abby Knoll, Mandan; Goat Tying – Teresa Renfrow, Bismarck; Keyhole Race – Jenna Schlosser, Mandan.
Junior Division (ages 10 to 14) – All-Around – Colton Roshau, Bismarck; Reserve All-Around – Calby Hanson, Mandan; Steer Riding – Seth Peterson, Minot; Barrel Racing – Madison Huber, Mandan; Breakaway Roping – Teddi Schwagler, Mandan; Pole Bending – Calby Hanson, Jamestown; Goat Tying – Teddi Schwagler, Mandan; Keyhole Race – Shelby Hartman, Mandan.
Beginner Division (ages 9 and under) – All-Around – Jade Boote, Binford; Reserve All-Around – Clayton Backhaus, Bismarck; Calf Riding – (tie) Kalli Jo Kautzman and Nash Sauers, Bismarck; Barrel Racing – Brooklyn Vollmer, Wing; Dummy Roping – Cayden Roshau, Bismarck; Pole Bending – Kelly Knoll, Mandan; Goat Tail Tying – Jade Boote, Binford; Keyhole Race – Clayton Backhaus, Mandan.
Open Division – Sack Race – Brad and Colton Roshau, Bismarck; Chute Dogging – Devin Miller, Glen Ullin; Pro-Am Team Roping – Jordan and Chad Staton, Hickson.
Prizes awarded included leather tooled rope cans for all-around champions, leather breast collars for reserve all-around champions and leather tooled saddle pads for event champions.
Jodi Kautzman, Mandan, was chosen by members to receive the club’s traveling Sportsmanship Award for her volunteerism as president for 2008 and 2009.
Brooklyn Vollmer, Wing, was honored with the Buddy Kahl Memorial Traveling “Beginner Persistent Rider” Trophy. The trophy is presented to the contestant in the age 9 and under division who earns the most points during the season, yet who did not win an all-around award at a rodeo.
Colton Roshau received the Becky Fisher Memorial Traveling Trophy as the contestant who earned the most points in timed and game events.
Club members also elected directors for the 2010 season as follows: Past President, Jodi Kautzman, Mandan; President, Tammy Backhaus, Bismarck; Vice President, Penny Hetletved, Bismarck; Arena Co-Directors, Jay Berger and Bob Lillis, both of Mandan; Treasurer, Cindy Knoll, Mandan; Secretary, Vonda Horner, Bismarck; Directors-At-Large, Eldon Schock Jr., Mandan, and Brad Roshau, Bismarck; and Youth Directors, Callen Clarys, Mandan, and Colton Roshau, Bismarck.
Dates for 2010 rodeos will be established following a Feb. 23 board of directors meeting to be held at 6 p.m. at the Mandan Community Center. Stay tuned for more information at mandanhorseandsaddle.com.
