Morton County 4-Her’s excel in communication
On May 29, Morton County hosted the District 8 and 9 Communication Arts Contest at Christ the King School in Mandan. Forty-five youth from Burleigh, Emmons, Kidder, McLean, Morton and Oliver counties participated.
Morton County participants included Margaret Bjelanovic, John Goettle, Lauryn Hinckley, Sierra Ellingson, Tyrza Hoines, Kelsie Schaff, Kaylin Tomac, Jenna Schaff, Ellie Bierman, Hannah Peterson, Dalton Sougstad, Kathryn Goettle, Hannah Nehl, Kourtney Schaff, Mariah Higgins, Medora Ellingson, Garrett Nehl, Henry Bierman and Adrian Sougstad.
The following Morton County 4-Hers received medals and honorable mentions: Preteen Illustrated Talk – Dalton Sougstad, Medal. Preteen Interpretive Reading – Hannah Peterson, Medal, Ellie Bierman, Honorable Mention; Preteen Short Takes – Sierra Ellingson, Medal; Preteen Demonstration – John Goettle, Honorable Mention; Teen Interpretive Reading Serious – Kaylin Tomac, Medal; Teen Prepared Speech – Jenna Schaff, Medal; Teen Short Takes – Tyrza Hoines, Medal; Kelsie Schaff, Honorable Mention; Teen 4-H Promotion – Carter Tomac, Medal.
All youth received participation awards; medals and honorable mention ribbons were awarded to the top teen and preteen in each division. Teen winners also had the choice of a scholarship to Extension Youth Conference in Fargo or a $50 savings bond.
Communication arts provides youth with an experience that helps participants develop communication skills that are useful throughout a lifetime by providing them an opportunity to gather and organize information, equipment and props for public presentation; develop participants’ confidence in making public presentations; and evaluate and enhance communication skills.
