Best in the state perform
The 2013 Junior High All State Band held a concert at the Mandan High School Auditorium on Saturday, March 16. The concert concluded a two-day festival in Mandan, which consisted of rehearsing the five pieces the band performed at the concert under the direction of guest conductor Sean O’Loughlin, of Los Angeles, Calif.
A total of 461 seventh and eighth grade students from 38 schools across the state auditioned to be in the band. Of those, 91 students were selected. A total of 11 Mandan Middle School band students were chosen – Emily Schmidt on oboe, Brandon Martin on bassoon, Connor Wieland on clarinet, Dillon Fischer on bass clarinet, Alexa Lembcke on alto saxophone, Brian Meissner, Kevin Ludlum and Jackson Nagel on trombone, McKenna Quintus on euphonium, Luke Peterson on tuba and Taylor Anderson on percussion.
O’Loughlin, a composer and arranger of well-known band literature, has had recent music collaborations with Adele, Sarah McLachlan, Hall & Oates and Harry Connick, Jr.
Also performing at the concert was the Bismarck-Mandan Wind Ensemble, which consists of adult musicians from around the area.
