Bismarck-Mandan liquor stores to change hands
Coborn’s Inc., the owners of Cash Wise, plans to buy the four Captain Jack’s liquor stores and the Bill’s Liquor store in Bismarck-Mandan pending approval of liquor license transfers.
Tom Miller and John Miller, store owners who opened the first store in 1982, plan to retire Jan. 1. Coborn’s spokeswoman Rebecca Kurowski said the company found out about the Millers’ retirement plans through a mutual business partner and an offer was made to buy the stores.
“It was the right time,” Tom Miller said. “Both parties are very happy.”
If the Bismarck and Mandan city commissions approve the license transfer, Kurowski said the target date for the ownership transfer will be Dec. 2.
The 50 employees of Captain Jack’s and Bill’s Liquor will keep their jobs. They will become employees of Coborn’s and receive the company’s benefits package, Kurowski said. She said wages are still being discussed, but she does not expect any loss.
Kurowski said no changes are planned, and the stores will continue to operate as Captain Jack’s. Coborn’s also operates a Cash Wise Liquor store in Bismarck, which will remain as it is.
