A taste of the country

Before there were Higways
By Delores Klusmann

Wow, the Third Annual Super Saturday Rummage Sale is here and gone. It was a huge success. We received so many wonderful comments. And the weather could not have been more perfect.

Thanks to all the sale holders and the buyers. There were buyers from many areas of the Western part of North Dakota, who enjoyed the small town atmosphere and hospitality.

The North Dakota Family Campers met for the weekend at the Morton County Fairgrounds in New Salem. Nick, from Zoovio, and I gave a short presentation to them on the Old Red Trail, which included a display of materials. The Lions almost sold out of their hamburgers at the museum. All in all it was a beautiful day.

Several of the folks who had rummage sales had household items left over and were willing to donate them to a charity. We loaded up a pickup truck and took a load to the House of Manna in Dickinson. They were very appreciative, saying that it was very much needed and will be used.

The Old Red Trail was the scene of years gone by this past week as the Bismarck based Pioneer Auto Club journeyed from Mandan to Medora traveling much of the way on the Old Red Trail, with stops along the way.

I happened to be in Richardton on that day. What a unique sight to see the classic cars and the drivers and passengers dressed in period dress. They, also, made a stops in New Salem, Glen Ullin, Dickinson and Belfield

Bison Energy held an Open House in New Salem this past week and opened their area offices. It was an informative day with delicious food. Bison Energy has been a good neighbor and a contributor to the area. They donated the gravel and trucks to re-gravel the road to Salem Sue as well as donating monetarily to area organizations.

Area folks got a taste of the country and the dairy industry when Northern Lights Dairy (Holle Dairy), south of Mandan, held their Breakfast on the Farm. They estimated close to 3,000 people who attended the event. It gave everyone, especially the kids, a reminder that our milk does come from cows. The kids had a great time in the petting zoo. Thanks to Kenton Holle and family.

As we are now finally having some warmer days, do get out and explore the road less traveled. It is very peaceful and beautiful.

Be well. Do good work. And see you on the Old Red.
