Ellen Huber: Antique store to open doors, Pride of Dakota retail store taking more time

Mandan is getting a second antique store. Mocha and More offers antiques at its 111 Sixth Ave. N.W. location, and now Kristi Keller plans to open the Traveling Trunk at 410 W. Main St. on Nov. 1. Kristi says to expect “funky finds for homes, bodies and minds.”

She explains, “Traveling Trunk is a unique blend of vintage repurposed furniture, clothing and decor. Each piece has a story waiting to be shared with a new owner.” Kristi plans to offer creative workshops for youth through adult customers.

The store will be open Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Additional hours may be added as Keller develops the store. For more info, call 333-8933 or follow the store on Facebook under Traveling Trunk.

Meanwhile, the steering committee for the High Plains Cooperative, seeking to market Pride of Dakota Products, has extended its equity drive to Dec. 15. The plan is to open a retail store and shipping center at 308 Main St. in Mandan.

The minimum goal of the equity campaign is to sell $290,000 in common stock to 65 or more Pride of Dakota member businesses at $4,500 per share and $75,000 in preferred stock, which any non-member investor can buy at $5 per share with a minimum purchase of 10 shares.

Due to the extension, the cooperative is updating its offering circular. The business plan is changing because the co-op now intends to lease, rather than purchase, the retail space. They also will not be able to secure kiosks in the major malls for the upcoming holiday season.

The steering committee is working with a restaurant to co-locate in the building, creating an atmosphere similar to the Cracker Barrel concept where patrons walk through the mercantile to get to the restaurant. The menu would include co-op members’ food and beverage products.

Stephanie Sullivan has been named the general manager of High Plains Cooperative. She brings a background in marketing and retail management, having worked for PETCO, Eddie Bauer and Hecht’s Department Stores.

Marlo Anderson of Awesome 2 Products, Mandan, is chair of the steering committee.
