Mandan voted ‘Most Patriotic City’
By Katie Jones, editor
Rallying together, the Mandan community soared above everyone’s expectations and won the online voting portion of Rand McNally’s Best of the Road, “Most Patriotic City” competition. With 3,554 votes, Mandan beat the closest competitor, Gallup N.M., by over 100 votes.
I am proud to be a part of the Mandan community! Across the nation, 600 towns were nominated in five categories: Most Beautiful, Most Patriotic, Most Fun, Friendliest, and Best for Food. But what would you know; Mandan came out on top as the most patriotic small town across the nation.
However, this is just the beginning of the competition. To continue on with the contest, the Rand McNally judges pit the top five finalists in each category against each other. The judges ask for a video demonstrating why Mandan is the “Most Patriotic” small town in America.
The Mandan Progress Organization in conjunction with the Mandan 4th of July committee and Awesome 2 Products are taking on this feat and will create a video for the second portion of the competition.
Kristen Helmers of the Mandan Progress Organization said, “Mandan has competed in this contest previously coming in second place, and we were voted into the competition again this year, and we became determined to take home the first place prize this year.”
“This year’s video submission is gearing towards the service our community provides to the armed forces, starting back from Custer’s time here to the present day. We want to highlight all of those who have dedicated their lives to providing us the reasons we celebrate our freedom so fervently.”
The producers of the video encourage the Mandan community to participate by sending stories, photos and videos showcasing patriotic pride. The video will showcase community wide events geared towards honoring the armed forces.
Send submissions for possible inclusion to email@example.com. Winning towns will be announced on October 7, and will receive a feature in the 2015 Rand McNally Road Atlas and a free custom iPhone app and online travel guide promoting your town as a top destination!
The town’s social participation on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter will also be taken into account during the final judging process.
Best of the Road launched in 2011 when Rand McNally teamed up with USA TODAY to find the Best Small Towns in America with populations under 150,000.
Online media has become an important tool in reaching out to people in the community. For example, I myself only use Facebook to advertise my photography business. By simply updating my site regularly I’ve had several local customers inquire about my services. I don’t have a formal website, but I believe social media has become the most valuable tool to reach out to the community.
With the sole intent to reach out to the Mandan community and keep every citizen up to date the instant I receive news, I created a Mandan News Facebook page and Twitter account. I will post updates during city and county meetings, fill the page with pictures and keep an up-to-date schedule of events.
