Wilfred Volesky: Community Center usage

Recently we have received calls from local patrons wondering about the status of the Community Center, and specifically the swimming pool. These patrons indicated they had been informed that since Community Center ownership has been turned over to the School District there was limited public use of the swimming pool. I would like to clarify this information for you.

It is accurate that the ownership of the Community Center was turned over to the Mandan School District on July 1. However, the management and operation of the pool has not changed from how it was operated in the past. The school district and park district continue to have a joint powers agreement which outlines the responsibilities that each entity has in the how the pool is operated. If you compare the present agreement and past agreements you will find very little has changed in how the pool is being managed.

The open swim hours are Monday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Times for lap swimming are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Monday to Friday from noon to 1 p.m. The poolside room will be available for rental during open swim hours. If you ever need additional information about the swimming pool, which is now called the Mandan Aquatic Center, please go to either the school district www.mandan.k12.nd.us or the Park District www.mandanparks.com website. These websites will provide you with pool use rates, pool hours for open and lap swimming and special events that will be occurring at the pool.

What has changed at the Community Center is public use of the remaining facility. The fitness area is no longer at the Community Center but rather at Raging Rivers. We realize that this does not make it near as handy for patrons to swim and use the fitness equipment as part of their fitness routine. The use of the gymnasium has also been curtailed until the renovation is complete. The public will be able to use the gymnasium when School District or Park District activities are not scheduled. We plan on having the gymnasium open during the same hours that the pool is open each day once the renovation is complete.

The school district started renovating the Community Center on July 12. We started with removal of some of the floor tile that had asbestos particles. They are now doing some demolition work in the area where the fitness equipment used to be located and should be framing the walls by the end of the week. The construction of classrooms in the gymnasium will be the last area that will be completed. The renovation is expected to be completed by March 1, 2011.

You can see ownership of the Community Center has changed but the operation of the swimming pool has remained pretty consistent. We hope this will encourage you to use the swimming pool for various activities just like you have done in the past.
