Community Military & Veterans Appreciation Picnic planned for July 5

Mandan’s Fourth of July celebration will again be capped in 2013 with a Community Military and Veterans Appreciation Picnic on Friday, July 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. The picnic will be at Dykshoorn Park on the 500 block of Mandan’s West Main Street. The public is invited to attend. The meal and entertainment are free. Donations to the N.D. National Guard Foundation are encouraged.

The Mandan Progress Organization and Bismarck-Mandan Chamber Military Affairs Committee are co-hosting the picnic with the help of several other organizations and businesses. The menu includes ribs, burgers, hotdogs, watermelon and bottled water for approximately 1,000 attendees.

A brief program honors all active military members, veterans and their families. Speakers include Mandan Mayor Arlyn Van Beek as well as representatives of the governor’s office and the North Dakota National Guard. USS North Dakota submarine sponsor Katie Fowler and Captain of the Boat Timothy Preabt will also make comments. Music is being provided by the West River Winds Band. Limited picnic table seating will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Community members are encouraged to put on their red, white and blue and join in the picnic to show their patriotic spirit and support for those who protect America’s freedom. T-shirts with the theme “Patriotism: Made in Mandan” are available at the Mandan Progress Organization office, at 411 W. Main St.

Mandan was a finalist for “Most Patriotic Small Town in America” in 2012 in a Rand McNally and USA Today “Best of the Road” contest. Proud community residents, alumni and people who had previously visited the area voted online to qualify Mandan for the honor.
