Kick-off social planned for Relay For Life

Since its inception, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Bismarck has grown into one of the area’s most popular and successful fundraisers. Last year, 71 teams comprised of more than 700 participants walked throughout the night to raise $243,000 for the American Cancer Society and its mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. This year the Relay’s planning committee has set its goal at 75 teams and $280,000.

“The committee realizes those numbers are a jump from past years, so we knew we’d have to get started right away,” says Lori Hoherz, chair of the 2013 Relay For Life of Bismarck. “That’s why we scheduled our kick-off social so early.”

The Relay For Life of Bismarck kick-off social has been set for Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Midway Lanes, located at 3327 Memorial Highway.

Staff and committee volunteers will be on hand to talk to past and present team captains, team members, cancer survivors and corporate sponsors about the innovations planned for this year. Appetizers and refreshments will be served and each team will receive a sign-up gift and earn 2,500 points toward winning the Ultimate Campsite for the event. Youth teams have the opportunity to sign-up for free, and all teams registering at the social will receive the early-bird pricing special of only $100.

“We know there are many men, women and kids in the county who have heard about Relay For Life, maybe even drove or walked by last year’s event at Century High School and wondered what was going on,” says Hoherz. “The kick-off social will be the perfect opportunity for everyone in the county to find out what the excitement’s all about.”

The 2013 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Bismarck is set for Saturday to Sunday, June 1 to 2, at Century High School.
