Spirit of Life Catholic parish in Mandan is home to the newest Knights of Columbus Council in North Dakota.

Over the course of 2009, Spirit of Life Pastor Chad Gion, along with the members of the parish, laid the groundwork and launched a Knights of Columbus Council there.

Close to 40 men registered for the new Knights of Columbus Council at Spirit of Life. Last summer, the group sent an application for a council charter to the Knights of Columbus Supreme office in New Haven, Conn. The Supreme office conveyed its approval of the application and sent the official charter to the new Spirit of Life Knights of Columbus Council last fall.

In early December, the Knights of Columbus N.D. State Deputy Cory Badinger, from Fargo, visited Spirit of Life and made a formal presentation of the charter to Father Gion, the parish and members of the new Knights of Columbus Council. Ray Morrell, Spirit of Life parishioner and Grand Knight of the new council, joined Father Gion in formally receiving the charter at the conclusion of a weekend mass.

“We are blessed to be able to start a Knights of Columbus council at Spirit of Life and are grateful State Deputy Cory Badinger joined us for the special occasion of presenting the official charter to us,” Morrell said.

The Knights of Columbus is the U.S.-based international service organization comprised of Catholic men. It is organized as local councils typically affiliated with a local Catholic parish. There are 92 Knights of Columbus councils in North Dakota, embracing about 14,000 Catholic men across the state. Each Knights of Columbus Council strives to serve a local parish and pastor and to enrich council members’ lives through pursuit of the virtues of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

The new council at Spirit of Life will be dedicated to the core values of the Knights of Columbus. Already, the Knights of Columbus at Spirit of Life have been busy, including the recently completed construction of the “Rosary Walk” prayer and meditation area on Spirit of Life property. Council members organized Mandan’s first ever “Walk For Life” in Mandan, during the October Respect Life Month.

As 2010 unfolds, the Spirit of Life Knights of Columbus Council will be involved in youth basketball, parish meals and a new membership drive, among other activities.
