The Mandan chapter Students Against Destructive Decisions, will host its second annual “Above the Influence” 5k-10k walk-run on Sunday, April 28. On-site registration starts at 12:30 p.m., followed by a brief presentation on the dangers of underage drinking, drunk driving and drug abuse. The walk and run will begin around 1 p.m.

This non-competitive event will be held on the corner of Nygren Drive and Old Red Trail. Participants will head east on the Old Red Trail walking path.

Nancy Kielpinski, SADD adviser and Mandan High School physical education teacher, says the group hopes to have a simulator available for participants to learn what it’s like to drive a vehicle while distracted or intoxicated. The simulator has a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals, and drivers will be put in various situations and asked to react.

The event costs $10 per person or $20 per family. Proceeds will be used for future educational events and materials by the Mandan chapter of S.A.D.D.

Last year’s walk and run raised $1,800. The money was used to allow members of the Mandan chapter of S.A.D.D. to attend the state conference, and rent simulators for community education.
