Custer Health awarded $10,000 community grant
Custer Health in Mandan has been awarded $10,000 for Standing Rock Reservation Men’s and Women’s Cancer Education and Screening through the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s 2013 community grant funding cycle.
This project aims to support cancer screening for men and women on the Standing Rock Reservation. It uses modes of service that have been used and proven to be successful in the past by Spirit of Eagles and Women’s Way programs. It also uses new approaches.
“We need to use new approaches, as well as those that we know to have been successful, to reach more people who have never been screened.” said Keith Johnson, director of Custer Health. “We’re using Lunch & Learn sessions, adding more field clinics to decrease barriers to service, and doing cancer education at worksites on the reservation. Anything to get more people screened. We’ve saved lives through this project.”
Since 2006, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has awarded over $650,000 dollars to community organizations that provide cancer prevention and early detection education and services.
