Author creating book series
By Brian L. Gray
Kathy Kinnischtzke, a former Mandan resident, has begun publishing a series of children’s books.
Kinnischtzke recently published the first book entitled, “Dad’s Best Present Ever.” It is the first in a series of nine books that revolve around a group of family puppies that have a knack for getting into trouble.
Kinnischtzke, who lives in Bismarck, graduated from Mandan Senior High in 1967. Her books are illustrated by Tom Marple, who lives in Mandan, and works as an art instructor at Bismarck State College.
Kinnischtzke’s idea for the series was inspired by the goings on in her own home. Her daughter, Susan, at the age of 4 decided that her dad should have a puppy for his birthday. The dog was named Socks, and it turned out that the dog was very mischievous, Kinnischtzke says.
“There was never a dull moment at our house. It seemed to us that having her was just like having six puppies instead of one,” Kinnischtzke says. “Most of the stories are true stories that we had while Socks was growing up.”
Kinnischtzke says the books are designed for third graders on down, and work well as bedtime stories to read to children of that age. She says in the upcoming books the puppies go camping, encounter the first snowfall, clean out the garage and one of the puppies get lost. She plans to publish two books each year.
Kinnischtzke’s book is available at Mandan-Bismarck grocery stores and Unistop locations. It will also be found at any of Pride of Dakota’s retail sites. You can learn more online at whatnextseries.com.
