With one last chance to make it into the 2012-13 state tournament, the fifth-ranked Braves girls basketball team exploded offensively, pulling comfortably ahead of St. Mary’s in the state qualifying game at the west region tournament.

The Braves defeated the Saints 68 to 39 to move on to this year’s state tournament, led by an impressive performance by Courtney Goetz, who dropped in 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the victory.

Mandan’s game came together in their third game of the tournament, who seemed to struggle in its first two games for shooting, as they shot 25 for 51 from the field and allowed only 13 turnovers.

St. Mary’s got within 7 points early in the second half before the Braves worked up a 17-3 scoring spree that gave them enough breathing room for the win.

In addition to Goetz’s 26 points in the game, the Braves also received scoring from Mariah Fredericks and Makenzie Schmidt with eight points, JaeLyn Russell with seven, and Hannah Hanson and Lexi Goldade each with six.

The Braves first paired off against the Minot Majettes in the opening round of the tournament, in what would be a tight game to the finish. The second half began with a 19-19 tie before Mandan was able to force a 14-0 run on the Majettes to put the advantage on their side of the court. The girls also added additional defensive pressure, forcing 19 turnovers in the second half, as they held on to their lead and won the game, 43 to 34.

Mandan was led in scoring by Fredericks, who put up 11 points, followed by Goetz and Schmidt, who each had seven.

The win placed the Braves in the semifinal round, taking on the top-seeded Century Patriots. Century started off strong, pushing immediately ahead to a 14-2 lead, while the Braves struggled with their shooting, starting off 2 for 15 on the field during the first 15 minutes. Mandan would only shoot 28.9 percent in the game, making 13 of 45 attempts, as Century defeated the Braves 56 to 35.

Mandan was led in scoring by Lexi Goldade, who put in 8 points in the loss.

Goetz was also awarded a spot on the west region all tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament.
