Mandan Fire Department celebrates Fire Prevention Week

In an effort to promote Fire Prevention Week, the Mandan Fire Department will hold its annual “Through the Smoke” road race on Saturday, and parade with open house on Tuesday.

Generally from the end of September to the beginning of October, the Mandan Fire Department discusses the importance of fire safety with a week dedicated to fire prevention.

Mandan firefighters have visited nearly 1,400 children in more than 50 kindergarten through third grade classrooms at Mandan’s five public and two private elementary schools in recent weeks to provide instruction on fire safety.

The students learned about the “stop, drop and roll” technique of escaping a fire, the importance of crawling low in smoke and having a household plan for a predetermined meeting place in the event of a fire.

Third graders are also given a chance to “hunt for hazards,” in a trailer brought to the school by the fire department. The trailer is full of fire hazards and students are asked to remedy these in their own homes as well.

Based on a coloring contest, one student, between the grades kindergarten through third grade, from each of the seven schools, will have the opportunity to ride a fire truck to school.

To promote fire prevention and raise money the Mandan Fire Department is hosting the “Through the Smoke” road race on Saturday, Oct. 5.

“Through the Smoke” is a 10K & 5K run and 5K walk, and will start with registration at 8 a.m. at Raging Rivers Water Park located at 2600 46th Ave SE in Mandan.

Money raised for the event will help purchase a thermal imaging camera. This will help firefighter see through the smoke and rescue victims that otherwise would be difficult to find during a fire.

To put a cap on the week-long prevention efforts, the fire department will close with a parade of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles, and an open house.
