Mandan News wins journalism awards

The Mandan News was named for several awards at the 2013 North Dakota Newspaper Association convention, which took place April 26 and 27.

The paper won second place in overall general excellence among the state’s weekly newspapers with a circulation of 1,000 to 1,999.

The Mandan News was presented with three first place awards. Brian L. Gray and Sandra Fettig placed first for the special “Rodeo Days” section, Gray took first in the feature photo category and Jen Heid won first for the Mandan News website.

In the news categories, Gray placed third in business news reporting and sports reporting. He also was given an honorable mention for personal column-serious and personal column-humorous.

Mandan News freelance photographer Rick Scharf was awarded third place in both the pictorial photo and recreational photo categories, and both Scharf and Gray were given second place in the picture story category. Gray placed second in news photo and third in portrait photo.

The newspaper also took third place in front page design excellence and overall design excellence.
