Another recreational outlet for enjoying the winter weather might be making its way into town.

The Mandan Park District is looking at creating a path for cross country skiing, possibly at the Mandan Municipal Golf Course. The district has applied for a grant that could provide anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 to create a trail. The grant is part of a program that promotes more outdoor events during the wintertime.

Mandan Park Board Commissioner Kevin Allen said that he has received a number of inquiries about a cross country ski path, and brought the issue up during the park board’s January meeting.

In Bismarck, the cross country trail is at Riverwood Golf Course. Golf Operations Manager Brad Olson said he traveled to the golf course to learn more about how they operate. He said the park district would need a groomer to mark the trail, which could be possible to do during the winter months at Mandan Municipal Golf Course. The groomer, Olson said, would cost about $5,000. He said that Morton County has a groomer they are interested in selling, which the park district could purchase.

The area that would cost the most money, however, is in equipment. Olson said it could cost significantly more money to purchase equipment for skiers to rent, and the park district would probably not pursue the idea of buying equipment at this time.

Parks Director Cole Higlin said the park district could also consider joining with the county on a cross country trail that both entities would operate and maintain. He mentioned that in addition to the Mandan Municipal Golf Course, the county-maintained Harmon Lake Recreational Area might be another location where cross-country could be offered.
