Oktober Fest features Mandan’s German heritage local brewers, artists.

Celebrate the regions German roots by attending Oktober Fest un Mandan on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Dykshoorn Park in downtown Mandan.
The Mandan Progress Organization is sponsoring the event with German and American food, contests, live music, crafts and a “brauhaus” (beer tent) with beer tasting.
“The Mandan Progress Organization wants to celebrate the area’s German Heritage and provide a fun family event before our winter sets in,” said Del Wetsch, Executive Director of MPO.
“We like throwing parties in the community that bring people to downtown Mandan.”
Gate admission is $5 with ages 12 and under welcomed free of charge.
Events for the day include a pumpkin chucking contest and several other fun competitions, such as a pumpkin decorating contest.
Free pumpkins are available for the first 100 participants from Monday, Sept. 23 through Friday, Sept. 27 at the Mandan Progress Organization office at 411 W. Main Street. Judging is from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Dykshoorn Park.
Other family events include a straw bale maze, face painting, a visit from the North Dakota Park and Recreation mascot “Roscoe the Raccoon” and a photo booth.
Live music will be playing from Hungry Five at 11:30 a.m., Johnny Vincent at 2:30 p.m., Mylo Hatzenbuhler at 1:15 p.m., The Gefroh Brothers at 4 p.m. and Rift at 7 p.m.
A beer tasting event in the “brauhaus,” will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Available for tasting are 20 craft beers including the official beer of the 2013.
Ted Hoffman, owner and brewer of Buffalo Commons Brewing Company in Mandan, has the honor to call his beer, Wind Blown Wheat, the official beer of Oktober Fest un Mandan.
The “tapping of the keg” ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Following are happy hour contests such as beer stein holding, a beer stein relay and many more.
Beer tasting tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate. Tickets are available at the MPO office or by calling 701-751-2983.
The Farmers Market will be attending to show appreciation to the Mandan community for their efforts and support of the Mandan Farmers Market.
Sponsors for the event include Wal-Mart, McQuade Distributing Co. Inc., Jerome Distributing Inc., and Buffalo Commons Brewing Co.
