Speech team captures WDA title

The Mandan High School Speech Team was named the winner of the 2013 west region speech tournament, which was held on April 6.

The MHS Speech Team also served as the host of the tourney, which was held at Mandan High School. A total of eight Class A teams made the tournament to compete, as Mandan pulled off an upset over the pre-tournament favorite, Bismarck St. Mary’s. Mandan outscored St. Mary’s 216 points to 203 to win the tournament.

Out of the 14 individual speech events, Mandan garnered seven event champions. Those who took first place at the meet from Mandan were Micayla Bitz, Mitch Hersch, Taylor Jung, Adam Michal, Shae Skager, Matty Singer and Kristian Stenslie.

In addition to the individual winners, 42 Mandan entries will now advance to the State A tournament in Jamestown on April 20.

Mandan will also be competing at the National Forensic League National Qualifying Tournament Monday and Tuesday, April 15 and 16, at the Seven Seas. The team will be receiving a national chapter award at that time as well.

Inform – Shae Skager, first; Kristian Stenszlie, second; Skylar Moody, seventh; Jordan Aldrich, eighth. Extemporaneous programmed reading – Hannah Jacobson, third; Genna Boehm, eighth. Extemporaneous speaking – Mitch Hersch, first; Cole Cymbaluk, second; Hannah Fishbeck, third; Klynton Lundstrom, fourth. Serious duo – Matty Singer and Carter Tomac, second; Kaytlyn Evanson and Morgan Rebenitsch, eighth. Humorous interpretation – Kristian Stenslie, first; Morgan Quintus, fourth; Elly Cannaro, eighth; Levi Schlosser, state qualifier. Drama – Matty Singer, first; Taylor Jung, fourth; Adam Michael, fifth; Elyssa Bickford, seventh. Serious prose – Taylor Jung, first; Matty Jansky, second; Morgan Rebenitsch, third. Also competing for Mandan were Brandon Schaner, Sydney Reimers, Dei’Yonna Beck and Taylor Abbott.
