Wanner and Borchers named August Athletes of the Month

The Mandan Athletic and Recreation Club named Mandan High School seniors, Ben Wanner and Carlie Borchers, August’s Athletes of the Month.

Wanner, son of Gloria and Tim Wanner of Mandan, had an undefeated month of August going 8-0 in tennis.

The MHS boys tennis coach, Paul Christen explained, “In matches against Williston and Jamestown, Ben posted wins in both of his singles and doubles matches which lead to 5-4 and 8-1 victories, respectively. At the Minot Round Robin, Ben took first place with a 4-0 record.”

Besides tennis, Wanner is involved in swimming, Latin Club, National Honors Society and Leadership Group at the high school. He is also, “almost an Eagle Scout,” with local Boy Scout Troup 89. His future plans are to attend The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity of the University of St. Thomas.

Borcher, daughter of Carrie and Scott Borcher, was nominated August Athlete of the Month for her competitive streak in girls swimming and diving.

MHS Girls swimming and diving coach, Ralph Manley, said, “The team only had one competition in August, but it was an evening of super swimming by the Braves, including Carlie Borchers, in a double dual against Bismarck High School and Century High School, Friday Aug. 30, at the Mandan Aquatic Center.”

“Borchers had an outstanding meet with six first place wins and two second place wins. She was the only double individual event winner for Mandan. Swimming against Century, Borchers placed first in the 200 Freestyle with the time of 2:06.85, 500 with a 5:45.58. Her times in both events qualified her for the state championships. Borchers’ other first came 400 Freestyle Relay and then second in the 200 Freestyle Relay.”

“In the Bismarck High Dual she was first in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay and then placed second in the 500 Freestyle.”

“Carlie was truly the focal point of the meet and helped all her teammates reach for higher places and faster times,” said coach Manley.

Borcher is also involved in the National Honor Society, Latin Club, concert band, jazz band and pep band. Besides being active with school, she is also a Girl Scout and Venture Scout. Plans after school include going to college and getting a degree in physical therapy. She also wants to become a collegiate swimmer.
