Mandan Braves raised $3,500 in one week
The Mandan High School volleyball and football teams raised $3,500 for the Bismarck Cancer Center, in one week, all by selling tee shirts.
Moved by a family member’s cancer diagnosis, Karla Zander has helped raise money for the American Cancer Society for two years.
This year she sold out of 325, gray and pink, “Be Brave,” tee shirts in one week. The volleyball and football teams, along with volunteers, sold shirts through flyers, school faculty announcements and emails.
To help raise breast cancer awareness, the Braves and the visiting volleyball opponents, Minot High School, wore pink uniforms for “Pink Out” night.
Zander’s daughter, Madysen Zander, is a junior playing on the Braves volleyball team and helped present the check with fellow teammate, senior, Sara Aune, wearing matching pink headbands, shoelaces and uniforms.
Also, there to present was Derrick Markel and Matt Ziemann, seniors on the Braves football team.
Rhonda Fetch, received the check on behalf of the Bismarck Cancer Center.
“Money donated to the American Cancer Society goes into a foundation and all donations received go directly back to the cancer patients,” said Fetch.
“Foundation money goes to various services such as physical therapy, dieticians, outreach coordinators, massages and gas cards.”
Sanford Medical Center and St. Alexius Medical Society, jointly own the American Cancer Society in Bismarck. The center treats all radiation patients in Bismarck – Mandan and the surrounding areas.
After handing the check to Fetch, the lady Braves formed a line, ready for their team introductions. Each player clutched a black Braves tee shirt, and as their names were called they ran over to the audience and threw a tee into the crowd.
Then quickly, select players ran over to Zander, who handed them a flower. The flowers were for families who have been affected by cancer. The ladies rushed over to their loved ones to hand off the flowers, then hurried back for a team huddle before the varsity home game.
Madysen Zander paced Mandan with 17 assists and 12 digs, and Sara Aune contributed 15 digs for Mandan; however, the Braves fell to Minot with a final score of 3 to 1.
