While the weekend was full of celebration for many, tragedy was also felt. On Saturday, Blake Allen Johnson, a 23-year-old man from Mandan drowned in the Lakewood Marina.
Shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday, police and emergency personnel had responded to a call from a group of individuals who were enjoying time on the lake.
Johnson, who had been jumping from a pontoon, and swimming with some friends, had to be pulled from the water others in the group. At the time, he was unresponsive, and by the time responders arrived, it was clear that he had drowned.
It was initially suspected that Johnson may have hit his head while diving into the water; however, an autopsy performed on Sunday found no injuries to his body, Mandan Police Lt. Lori Flaten said.
“He had no trauma whatsoever,” Flaten said.
While the drowning has been ruled to be accidental, alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the situation. It would take some time before the lab results will come back to either confirm or dispel this suspicion though, Flaten said.
