Midway Lanes named Granite Award recipient

The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce has named Midway Lanes, Inc. as the recipient of the 2013 Granite Award.

The Granite Award is presented each year to one local business that has been a dependable employer and community steward for 50 years or more. Midway Lanes has served as recreational outlet since 1961. Originally operating 24 lanes, Midway has since expanded to 52 lanes, which is a 217 percent increase.

“As the population of our communities grew, Midway Lanes kept pace,” said Kelvin Hullet, president of the Chamber. “Jim’s commitment to the cities of Bismarck and Mandan is evident in the construction that’s taken place at his business, but it goes beyond that. He continues to serve as a source of employment, entertainment and reinvestment.”

Midway Lanes was chosen for the 2013 Granite Award by the Chamber’s Excellence in Business Committee. “Midway Lanes came to the top of our list after reviewing their steady operational success as well as their community involvement and philanthropy,” said EIB chairman Mike Schmitz from Widmer Roel PC.

Midway Lanes has hosted dozens of charity tournaments, continues to host the high school after prom parties, dispensed free bowling coupons, and provided scholarships.

Midway Lanes is owned and operated by Jim Mellon and located on the Strip in Mandan. In addition to the bowling lanes, Midway Lanes includes a lounge, game room, pro shop, meeting rooms and a trophy shop.

The Granite Award will be presented to Midway Lanes, Inc. on Aug. 8, 2013, during Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan, an annual event hosted by the Chamber. Celebrate recognizes local businesses and business leaders for their achievements.  Tickets to the event are available at or by calling 223-5660.
