Name selected for new Mandan school

The Mandan School Board on Monday unanimously decided on a name for the new elementary school in Mandan – Red Trail Elementary School.
The school district asked the public to provide their submissions for names. A total of 61 names were submitted. Of those, school administrators narrowed the list down to eight finalists, and asked the school board to vote on their favorite.
Other possible names for the school included Sakakawea, Sunset Hills, Great Plains, Kautzmann-Shaw, Roughrider, Meadowlark and North Prairie.
School board member Lee Fleischer said he would like to see the school district create a hall of fame that honors some of Mandan’s past educators, pointing out that only one school in Mandan is named after a former teacher, Mary Stark.
“I think there’s people that taught in this community that we need to recognize long-term, and that’s why we had Kautzman-Shaw placed on the list,” Fleischer said.
The school district previously held similar open contests to name new buildings during the naming of the Brave Center and the former junior high, which was named the Great Plains Academy.
The new kindergarten through fifth-grade elementary school will be located at the intersection of Lewis Road and 37th Avenue N.W.
