Organization recognized with support

The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program has awarded a $25,000 one-year grant to Custer Health to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer on the Standing Rock Reservation. It is the 11th year that the program has received funding from the Avon Foundation for Women to support its work on this important health issue, and in recognition of the program’s excellence.

Women’s Way, the North Dakota breast and cervical cancer early detection program, at Custer Health will educate Standing Rock-area women and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. This vital program will also promote and support breast cancer awareness through outreach and recruitment in the hopes of early detection.

Since January 2002, the Women’s Way program at Custer Health has reached more than 500 women per year with information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and has referred almost 200 women per year for mammograms and clinical breast exams.
