Down by one point against Grand Forks Central, Braves junior quarterback Ross Effertz connected with Daniel Peterson with little more than one minute remaining in the game to pull Mandan ahead, and ultimately confirm the win, in the Braves’ opening season game at Faris Field.

Effertz and Peterson went 25 yards in the scoring play with 1:16 on the clock to complete a 10-play, 70-yard drive to lead 14 to 7, and also secure Mandan’s win at home.

Grand Forks was able to make it into the endzone with only 16 seconds left to go, but the Braves’ defense was able to shut down the two-point pass attempt and earn the win, 14 to 13.

The Braves’ first touchdown came on the defensive end in the third quarter, when Nathan Schmidt picked off a pass and took it in for a touchdown. Mandan’s defense had four interceptions in the game.

The Braves totaled 241 yards in the win, led by running back Matt Ziemann with 37 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Effetz completed 10 passes in 26 attempts for 124 yards.
