Girls soccer team makes state appearance

The Mandan Braves girls soccer team earned its first spot at a state tournament this year since it became a school sanctioned team in 1996.

Its first appearance turned out to be a challenging one, as the Braves first faced off against the east’s top seeded Fargo Davies Eagles in the quarterfinal round. Fargo Davies struck first blood 12 minutes into the game, and didn’t stop there. By halftime Mandan was down 2-0, but in the second half Davies went on a scoring streak, putting in five goals as Mandan fell in the opening round 7 to 0. Jennifer Marsh had two goals and two assists for the Eagles, while Mackenzie Carlson added a goal and two assists.

Mandan goalie Rachel Ford stopped 14 shots at the goal while Mandan, which focuses on a strong defensive game, was only able to get two shots on goal.

The Braves then faced off against Fargo North in the loser-out game, and its defensive strength showed in its performance, as both teams remained shut down by the end of regulation time.

The game made its way into two overtimes, and just as the possibility of a shootout looked apparent, the Spartans’ junior Andie Sarafolean scored a goal with only 5.2 seconds remaining in the second overtime, effectively ending Mandan’s season.

Ford once again was strong at the goal, making 12 stops for the Braves.
