MAR Club November Athlete of the Month
Brandon Zachmeier, a Mandan High School sophomore whose wrestling record in November is 2-0, is the MAR Club boys athlete of the month for November.
His wrestling coach, Ben Beckler, said Zachmeier started the season very successfully for the Braves and in the first Coaches Poll was the second-ranked wrestler in the state at the 126-pound weight class. He also picked up two good wins with a victory over the fourth-ranked wrestler from Dickinson and a returning state qualifier from 2013 in the Bismarck High Dual.
Zachmeier was much improved as the season progressed last year and earned a fifth-place finish at the state tournament. With offseason training and wrestling, he came back even tougher this season and Beckler believes he should be able to move up the podium for the Braves this season.
At only a sophomore level, his work ethic has put him into a leadership role on the team as an athlete who leads by example during practice and competitions.
Madysen Zander, a Mandan High School junior, is the MAR Club girls athlete of the month of November.
As volleyball co-captain, Zander had a lot of responsibility this year not only to run the team’s offense as setter but to keep a very young team on task.
Coach Anna Folk said Zander was always willing to do whatever was asked of her, whether that was learning the libero position or being a big right-side blocker “She always put 110 percent effort into whatever she was doing. Although as a team, we fell short of a couple of our team goals, Mady really stepped up her game in the month of November,” Folk said.
She was voted the team’s MVA for this season and ended the season with 400 assists, 188 digs and 27 aces.
