March athletes of the month
Here are the Mandan Athletic and Recreation Club athletes of the month for March:
Chelsea Peterson – Girls Track and Field
Parents: Lee and Brenda Peterson
Chelsea Peterson was the leading scorer for the Braves girls track and field team in March. At the WDA Indoor in Minot, Peterson won the 200 meter dash and the 55 meter hurdles, and also placed fifth in the 400 meter dash. At the state indoor in Fargo, Peterson won the 60 meter hurdles, placed fifth in the 200 meter dash and was part of a fourth place 1600 meter relay team.
Braves Girls Track and Field Head Coach Mike Kuhn said of Peterson, “Chelsea has a passion for success in track and field. She is a great leader by example, and has always done anything the team needs her to do for the good of the whole.”
In addition to track, Peterson also participates in cross country in the fall and basketball in the winter. She is active in Trust-n-Teens, FCA, National Honors Society and the Leos Club.
When Peterson graduates, she would like to continue her career in track and field, and work towards becoming a respiratory therapist.
Matthew Poppe – Boys Swimming and Diving
At the state boys swimming and diving meet in March, Matthew Poppe took first place in the 50 freestyle event. He swam a 21.92 in the preliminary round, a 1.5 second drop from his WDA time, and in the finals round he completed the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.60 to be crowned the state champion.
Poppe also took second place in the 100 freestyle, with a swim time of 48.67 second in both the preliminary and finals rounds. This time he beat his previous best swim time of 50.80 seconds.
Poppe swam in two relays at the state tournament. Swimming in the 200 freestyle relay, he placed seventh alongside his team with a time of 1:33.03. He also swam in the first leg of the 400 relay, and provided his team with a solid lead, as the team finished in sixth place with a 3:37.71 time.
With Poppe’s performance at the state meet, he was named to the first team of the North Dakota All State Swimming and Diving Team.
Boys Swimming and Diving Head Coach Ralph Manley said, “Matthew had a great month of March for the boys swimming and diving team. Overall the team had an outstanding state championships, but Matthew was the exclamation point.”
