Strides Walk set for May 18
Saturday, May 18, marks the fourth annual Strides Walk for Diabetes Awareness. The event is a 3-mile or 5-mile fun-run or walk, and will be held at Mandan Lefty Faris Field. Preregistration begins at 10 a.m. with the run-walk scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Registration is $15 per person or $30 per family. All participants will receive a T-shirt, and door prizes will be given out at the end of the race.
The Strides Walk is sponsored by the Mandan Dacotah Lions, a service organization that raises money and donates it to various charities in the community.
The Strides Walk is as much about raising awareness of the diabetes epidemic sweeping our country, as it is about raising money. Diagnosis of diabetes is especially increasing among young people.
When you participate in a local fundraiser the money stays in the community. With the money raised from the 2012 Strides Walk, the Mandan Dacotah Lions were able to provide low vision machines for two people in our community who are visually impaired. These machines allow visually impaired individuals the opportunity to be more independent by restoring their ability to read newspapers, recipes and books.
In addition $2,000 was designated for scholarships for children who have diabetes to attend Camp Sioux, a summer camp for insulin-dependent diabetic children, ages 8 to 14. Camp Sioux is staffed by physicians and nurses with a special interest in diabetes, dietitians, psychologists, and counselors with diabetes who understand the children’s needs and are strong role models.
Any families who have a diabetic child can contact the Lions for details about scholarships to Camp Sioux. The goal this year is to provide scholarships for 12 or more local youth with diabetes to attend the Camp.
Businesses or individuals can help promote an awareness of diabetes in our community by becoming a corporate sponsor. For more information, contact Herman Schafer at 471-2528, Sherry Fetch at 426-343 or Steve Moore at 527-8179.
